Your mention of Paul being fired by "a bishop" because he was gay (and he was not the only one so removed by "a bishop"} neatly sidestepped that "a bishop" was Jack Spong. Blessedly Jack repented of this but it did greatly impact Paul's life. His move to Manhattan brought him to the Church of the Intercession where he met his beloved Victor and I met them both. So man (or "a bishop") meant it for evil but God used it for good.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05424755135219921024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5759133225080604006.post-37186366338168814192018-01-29T21:24:50.024-05:002018-01-29T21:24:50.024-05:00Thank you for this review. I think a renewed Integrity needs to consider what we will do after the November elections. The real changes will take place once we know the make up of the incoming Congress as well as President and just as important what State legislatures and governorships will look like as we head into 2017. Somehow we need to be ready to respond actively and effectively to both worst and best case scenarios (as best we can define either). In the meantime, I think it is already the case and will continue to be so until November that energy of GLTBQ folk is focused on the election of our own kind and of allies. Matters of the Church will obviously continue to concern us but they will likely take on the nature of holding our current position at diocesan and parochial levels until the outcome of the general elections. This November is likely to determine the fundamental nature of our government and society for years to come and we are very close to taking final steps to lose what is left of our Democratic Republic to authoritarian fascism, the final marriage of oligarchs, corporations, the military, and the government under ideological and impulse driven leadership of Trump and his like. The election of a Democrat to the White House will not make all that much difference unless Congress and the States change leadership as well. The Church can advocate for the time being and individuals can support progressive candidates, but we can't really move ahead until we know what and who will be in secular power after November. // At age 75 living in NH, I experience daily life as deceptively easy in the Church and in the wider public sphere. Yet I live and serve as volunteer chaplain in an independent living retirement community - fully heterosexist, so I a living in a new kind of closet from day to day, grateful for university and church friends outside of the community and a spouse of 47 years with whom I can be fully myself. My involvement with Integrity is just senior membership and ministering outside of my immediate community to individuals, churched and non-churched. My gay friends hold me up as much or more than I do them. Integrity must survive the coming months and build up energy to become once again a force to be reckoned with come the post-election results. Lisa Hunt, during a sermon, assured the congregation that the time had not yet come but that it would come in due course. And she was right. Credit also goes to former Secretary of State James Baker who advised the bishop that he needed to figure out a way to implement Covenant Blessings, because denomination wide approval was inevitable. The Bishop did and the diocese did not fracture over it. It's far more effective to stay involved and keep asking for fairness, while contributing to the life of one's parish.

Another wise member of the clergy, Rev. Helen Havens, would often remind people that if a change in society that was perceived as radical remained over the long run, then it was God's will. Conversely, if a radical change was made and then faded away, it was because the change was not God's will.

I want to thank all of the people who I have named here plus those I haven't for making the Diocese of Texas a better place to live.12StepStevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08292178006799804654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5759133225080604006.post-6130409318133511202016-02-18T11:49:53.613-05:002016-02-18T11:49:53.613-05:00I thank God that I belong to a church that reflect...I thank God that I belong to a church that reflects love, although, like all humans, it sometimes takes a while to understand what love means.
Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08791334456141756671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5759133225080604006.post-31191380426450128862016-02-18T07:29:14.012-05:002016-02-18T07:29:14.012-05:00What happy news! I truly appreciate your encourageme...Dear Friends,

I truly appreciate your encouragement to The Episcopal Church and the LGBT community after the events in Canterbury. While I know that we are called to forgiveness, I don't believe that requires acquiescence. Presiding Bishop Curry will, as he should, continue to hold the high ground on this matter.

However, some of the rest of us should be lighting our hair and becoming much more active in our responses. Personally, i believe that we should accept the fact that some leaders within the communion have no intention of listening to calls for recognizing, loving, and celebrating LGBT Anglicans and others. On the contrary, they are doubling down their practices of bigotry and hatred.

If this was simply a process of exclusion or insult, restrained diplomacy might seem reasonable. However, a genocide is happing in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and the Southern Cone. Most Anglican leaders in these areas remain silent or actively support this evil. I don't believe those who are being criminalized, attacked, arrested, imprisoned, or killed can afford the customary polite and pious Episcopal lamentation. "I beg to differ" ain't enough.

I am posting a letter that I just emailed to the Primates of Nigeria & Uganda. My hope is that others will do likewise. My other hope is that we will address the suffering of the LGBT communities in other nations the same way we addressed the Apartheid in South Africa. Please do read what I have written and offer whatever response you might have.

"None of us are free if one of us is chained".

The Rev. Randall J. Keeney
Greensboro, NC

+++

February 6, 2016

Most Reverends Okoh & Ntagali,

I have been concerned about the treatment of the LGBT community in Nigeria, Uganda, and other countries for years. I had hoped that diplomacy, prayer, and conversation might have had a positive effect. It does not seem that it is working. In fact, your recent actions at Canterbury prove this point.

Today, I write to you pleading that you use every resource at your disposal to save the lives of those who have been criminalized, arrested, tortured, imprisoned, and/or executed. In TEC, we take vows in our baptismal covenant to "strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being." I would assume you do the same.

You have tremendous influence in your country. Much of the law is written and sustained by the positions you choose and a variety of matters. Please use that influence to overturn laws that put LGBT lives at risk, to call your people to restraint and tolerance, to put an end to violence and imprisonment, and to begin to offer to these children of God respect and dignity. Any silence on your part in these matters is, in fact, support of the evil that is being perpetrated against them. Like Pontius Pilate, you cannot wash your hands of this.

Please know that I am writing sending this letter to other members of the Anglican Communion where this is happening. As an Anglican priest, I can not ignore this. I have fought for the rights of the LGBT community in the USA. Although we have much more work to do, we have made significant strides in the last few years. Gay and Lesbian persons have equal protection under the law and are consider children of God with all the dignity that this designation by God demands.

I will continue this struggle without regard to national borders. I will plead with our Diocesan Bishops, the Presiding Bishop of TEC, the National Executive Council, the Archbishop of Canterbury and others to intervene in the atrocities that are being committed in Nigeria, Uganda, and other nations.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The Rev. We are the hands, eyes, ears, feet, breath, and heart of Jesus Christ on this blessed Earth. We are the living Christ here, now, today. Share, love, breathe, and be.

As a former delegate in the Diocese of Olympia (Washington State) who was privileged to participate in the election of our current bishop, I can testify that this is a very serious prayerful process. I hope this is the case throughout the American Episcopal Church, including the General Convention. If this is so, we are following the guidance of The Holy Spirit in this process - as a church, as a people, as Children of God. We will not be deterred.

As a cradle Piskie since 1947, I have watched our church struggle with issues of race, women, language in the revision of The Book of Common Prayer, and now issues of sexual diversity. We have been at the forefront of these issues and have dealt with criticism at each juncture. We have been consistent in our struggle within our human-ness, in our hearing The Holy Spirit speak, and in living the Gospel.

This is a journey take together, in faith,in prayer, in love, and in forgiveness. We remain at the forefront, as our loving God has chosen us through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in communion with The Holy Spirit today and always.
