Newark Episcopal Bishop Mark Beckwith said today that he voted with the majority of the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops on resolutions that will likely to increase the divide between the liberal denomination and its worldwide body, the Anglican Communion.

"The (Anglican) primates wanted us to sacrifice -- it felt like -- the rights and privileges and gifts of the gay and lesbian and transgendered people, for the sake of community," Beckwith, said from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where he was awaiting a flight back to New Jersey. "We don't use anybody as pawns in any kind of process.

"Their request really doesn't honor the way we function," he said. "We're in a relationship with them, but our accountability is to...other (Episcopalians)."
