Bishop-elect will seek input of parishioners

The incoming spiritual leader of 25,000 Ohio Episcopalians is clear about where he stands on the most pressing issue facing the denomination: Same-sex unions are consistent with religious teaching.

"In my view, a committed, faithful, loving covenant between two men or two women in service to one another is not prohibited by Scripture; therefore, I believe the church should honor such covenants," said the Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, who is scheduled to become bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio on Saturday.

Breidenthal, 56, also said that the church should honor gay clergy members who are single or in committed relationships.
