Here are a couple of Pentecost stories from Sunday's NY Times. Canterbury, it looks like the Holy Spirit didn't get the memo.
Thea Spyer and Edith Windsor
Thea Clara Spyer and Edith Schlain Windsor were married in Toronto on Tuesday. Justice Harvey Brownstone of the North Toronto Family Court officiated at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel. Read the rest of this great story here.
Mark Lewis and Dennis Winslow
The Rev. Mark Alan Lewis and the Rev. K. Dennis Winslow, Episcopal priests, were joined in civil union on Tuesday. The Rev. Tim S. Hall, also an Episcopal priest, officiated at the couple’s home in Union City, N.J., assisted by his wife, the Rev. Jacqueline Schmidt. Read the rest this great story here.
Speaking as someone who is a former atheist, liberal, and transexual, I wouldn't dismiss the Holy Spirit so quickly. All you have to do is look at the plummeting numbers in the mainline protestant churches. The Holy Spirit has left (the converse of "When two or more are gathered in my name, I am there.") and empty ritual will not sustain a church. The episcopal church is trying to outpace the decline of mainline churches as a whole.
