BREAKING NEWS FROM THE DIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES

December 4th, 2009

INTEGRITY WELCOMES THE ELECTION OF THE REV. CANON DIANE M. JARDINE BRUCE AS NEW BISHOP SUFFRGAN IN DIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES

The Rev. Canon Diane Jardine Bruce made history by becoming the first woman elected a bishop in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Amongst a diverse slate of candidates, including two openly gay partnered priests, Bruce was elected on the third ballot. Bruce is currently the rector of St. Clements by-the-Sea Church in San Clemente, California. She is married with two children.

"Bishop Elect Bruce is a longtime ally and friend of Integrity", said David Norgard, President of Integrity USA. "As deputy to GC2009, Diane was a staunch supporter of all the sacraments for all the baptized. She brings a strong background in finance to a diocese that is experiencing the economic crunch as well as a long-time commitment to the full inclusion of LGBT persons in the life of the Church.”

The Rev. Canon Susan Russell, immediate past president of Integrity, commended her Diocese of Los Angeles on its search. “This group of candidates sets the bar for what this church should look like. There were women  and men, two openly gay partnered priests, an African American and two Hispanics. Any one of them would have made a great choice. I am very confident that Diane Bruce will be an excellent bishop for this diocese and for the greater church."

The Diocese of Los Angeles is electing two Bishops Suffragan. The second election results will be available tomorrow.

Integrity urges consents to this election and looks forward to working with Bishop Elect Bruce to turn the legislation we worked so hard together to pass into a reality throughout the church.
