Panelists Address Homosexuality's Place In Episcopal Church

A panel of clergy, professors and students discussed the consequences and conflicts of the Episcopal Church's acceptance of homosexuality Thursday night at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.

In front of about 50 people, the Rev. Liz Stedman, chaplain at Northwestern's Episcopal Campus Ministry, led the discussion titled "Beyond Us and Them: How the Episcopal Church's embrace of LGBT people is invigorating its proclamation of the Gospel." The event was sponsored by Rainbow Alliance as part of its series of Rainbow Week events.

Stedman, an ordained Episcopal priest and a lesbian, said the church's public acceptance of gay clergy has brought both spiritual benefits and controversy.

"The Episcopal Church is moving from a position of charity to one of identity," she said. "Rather than feel sorry for them, the problems of gay men and women are really being taken into account."

How the Episcopal Church's embrace of LGBT people is invigorating its proclamation of the Gospel

Sponsored by the Northwestern Rainbow Alliance and Canterbury Northwestern Episcopal Ministry

This program will include the personal narrative of Canterbury’s chaplain, Liz Stedman, in her journey to priesthood as an out lesbian. She will offer her story as an avenue for reflecting on the evolution of our church and the evolution of her own thinking both about the church and about her relationship to God.

Following Liz’s remarks, a panel will explore the questions raised above.

equality in The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion; but thou mayest post some LGBT secular news and LGBT news from other faith traditions.
Thou shalt not post copyrighted material in its
entirety; for it is abhorrent to the United States government. Rather, thou shalt post an excerpt or summary with a link to the original source.
Thou shalt cite the original source (author,
title, affiliation, publisher, date) of a post whenever possible; thus may readers direct their rants and raves in the right direction.
Thou shalt be wise with the quantity of material thou posteth to the blog; for the reader unsubscription rate is inversely proportional to the number of daily posts.
Thou shalt replace shaped quotation marks and
apostrophies (“ ” ’) with straight equivalents (" " ') whenever possible; for shaped characters are not supported by all e-mail servers.
Though mayest embed YouTube and Google video clips in a post but thou shalt also provide a hyperlink to the clip; for the clip itself may be stripped out of the e-mail version.
Thou shalt include graphics with thine posts when possible; for plain text is really boring.
